The Universidad de La Frontera (UFRO) is inserted in La Araucanía and is a public state university considered as one of the ten best higher education institutions in the country. At present, bioresources is the outstanding research line of this institution, representing the most relevant area for the regional development.
The university offers a Doctoral and Master´s Degree Program in Sciences of Natural Resources. This program trains researchers with high skills for solving problems associated with regional and domestic development in the degrading soil areas, water and environment preservation, bioenergy, green fuel production and agriculture-forestry sustainability. It focuses on using biotechnological processes which will generate new research lines of great impact in the future development and researching activities in the country.
The Program last four years for the doctorate and offers the option of magister after two years of study.

The main objective of the Doctorate Program in Sciences on Natural Resources is to train sciences researchers at the highest level, with a multidisciplinary and integral vision in the fields of biology, microbiology, environmental and soil phisiochemistry, ecological terrestrial and aquatic chemistry,
Currently, the Program has emphasized bioprocesses for a sustainable agriculture, biotechnology on agroalimentary production, residues management, bioenergy and renewable energies as well as a strong emphasis on metagenomics and metaproteomics.
Graduates of this program will attain an integrating vision in the fields of soil chemistry, soil biology, soil-water-plant relationship and their relation to plant production. They also will be trained in soil conservation, prevention and bioremediation of contaminated areas. They will be able to generate and maintain research lines dealing with bioenergy, thus they will be incorporated to the existing academic teams in the different Chilean universities.
